Accountability and oversight for police is critically important, and a central reason why police services must remain public. Accountability and oversight must be robust to maintain the public’s trust and it must be fair to ensure that officers can work effectively.

Recent changes introduced in Ontario will prevent police officers from fairly responding to internal inquiries and cause more delays in investigations that already take years to complete. This will lead to increased costs and frustrations on all sides.

It will also create an incentive for officers to choose a course of action least likely to result in a complaint, even if that complaint would be without merit. Creating a system that could cause hesitation when dealing with a dangerous criminal threatens the safety of both officers and civilians.
